Props to have on hand
How the counts are worked out
Mats are always your headcount plus a rounded-up 10% spares buffer (minimum two). Every other prop uses a per-student ratio set by your class style, then rounds up to the next whole prop.
The ratios follow common studio-stocking conventions: restorative and yin classes get the heaviest prop allowance, gentle/hatha classes get roughly half that, and vinyasa/power classes get the lightest.
Frequently Asked Questions
Why do restorative and yin classes need more props than vinyasa?
Restorative and yin classes hold shapes for longer and lean on props for support, so this calculator gives them the highest block, strap, bolster, and blanket ratios per student. Vinyasa and power-flow classes move continuously and typically use very few floor props, so their ratios are much lower.
How many spare mats should a studio keep?
The calculator adds a spares buffer of 10% of your headcount, with a minimum of two spares, on top of one mat per student — enough to cover a mat that's out being cleaned or a drop-in student who didn't bring their own.
Why are some prop counts rounded up?
You can't stock half a bolster, so every prop quantity is rounded up to the next whole number. That means the calculator will always suggest at least enough props to cover the ratio, never slightly short.
Can I use this for a home practice space instead of a studio?
Yes — set students to 1 or 2 and pick the class style closest to how you actually practice, and the same ratios will give you a sensible personal prop kit.
