The national capital saw a resounding celebration of physical and mental wellness, as the ‘Fit India Sundays on Cycle’ event took over the Major Dhyan Chand National Stadium. Tania Sachdev, Indian chess grandmaster and Olympiad gold medallist, was among the key figures inspiring the crowd with her presence and words of encouragement.
- Key highlights of the event included a cycle rally, Zumba, rope skipping and yoga sessions.
- Over 600 participants joined the fitness activities, turning the Sunday morning into a festival of fitness and community.
The event was a fitting tribute to the eighth anniversary of the Goods and Services Tax (GST), a landmark policy aimed at simplifying the tax structure and promoting economic growth in India. By merging fitness awareness with a policy anniversary, the government demonstrated its continued commitment to health, community building and environmental sustainability.
Cycling is now a part of Tania Sachdev’s fitness regime, which she attributes to the discipline and willpower required for such activities.
“Fitness doesn’t need fancy equipment or a gym — just willpower and discipline,” said Sachdev to the crowd. “Stamina is essential even in chess. Cycling is now a big part of my fitness regime.”
Sachdev also highlighted the collective spirit of the event, emphasizing the importance of a shared vision and initiative in driving change. “It’s such a good experience — people came out with a lot of energy. It’s all because of the vision of Prime Minister Narendra Modi and the initiative of Sports Minister Mansukh Mandaviya. It’s a beautiful reminder that fitness doesn’t require a gym or expensive equipment. The motivation to come together is enough.”
Reflecting on her training schedule and upcoming commitments, Sachdev shared her thoughts on the role of fitness in her life, both as a chess player and as a professional athlete. “I just got back from a training session and I’m now flying to Norway for commentary at the upcoming chess tournament. In August, I’ll be back to playing. Fitness is a big part of chess and I’m definitely adding cycling to my routine.”
The ‘Sundays on Cycle’ event was part of the broader Fit India Movement, launched in 2019 by Prime Minister Narendra Modi to encourage citizens to adopt a healthier lifestyle. By celebrating the eighth anniversary of the GST, the government served as a reminder of its continued commitment to health, community building and environmental sustainability.
