A Safe Haven: Tula Yoga’s Neurodivergent-Focused Yoga Class

Neurodivergent individuals often struggle to find spaces that cater to their unique needs and experiences, which is why a new yoga class at Tula Yoga aims to fill this gap. The class, led by instructor Isabelle Desmarais, provides a safe, inclusive, and accessible environment for individuals to find calm, connection, and community.

The Concept Behind “Ease and Embody”

• Gentle and slow-paced
• Small class size (limited to 10 participants)
• Dimmed lights to reduce sensory overload
• Emphasis on gentleness and choice
• Seated meditation and breathwork at the beginning
• Restorative poses and optional standing postures depending on the needs of the group
The class environment is carefully designed to accommodate the needs of neurodivergent individuals, who may face challenges such as anxiety, sensory sensitivity, or difficulty with social interactions.

A Unique Approach to Yoga

Yoga, typically associated with physical postures, has a different focus for Desmarais. “Yoga isn’t about turning your body into a pretzel,” she emphasizes. “It’s about coming into union with yourself. That’s the core of what I teach – finding home in your body and learning to listen to its signals with kindness.”
This approach is particularly important for neurodivergent individuals, who may struggle with self-regulation and body awareness.

Benefits of the Class

• Reduced anxiety and stress
• Improved self-regulation and body awareness
• Enhanced sensory integration
• Opportunities for social connection and community-building
Desmarais’ approach has already shown promising results, with participants experiencing a range of benefits, including reduced anxiety and improved self-regulation.

Quote from Bryttni Nameth, Tula Yoga Studio Manager

“We hope that Ease and Embody offers participants a space to connect – to themselves and to each other. Feeling different can sometimes be isolating, so we hope this class can be a place where neurodivergent individuals and even their families can find a sense of community and support.”

Accessibility and Inclusivity

• Classes are $22 per session
• Participants are encouraged to bring items that help them feel more comfortable
• Desmarais emphasizes that everyone is welcome, and that the class is an offering, not a requirement
Tula Yoga’s commitment to accessibility and inclusivity is evident in the design of the “Ease and Embody” class. Quote from Isabelle Desmarais, Yoga Instructor
“I have to pinch myself sometimes – it’s really happening. It’s a dream come true to create a space that caters to the needs of neurodivergent individuals.”
